WORDPRESS, WEB DESIGN, AND BLAH, BLAH, BLAH…

WordPress Preserving their Trademark

Do not use WordPress in your Domain Name

So, this week I’m re-working how to do WordPress Wednesdays. Special thanks to Tasha who emailed me this link. With WordPress being open-source software, and my tutorials written only to aid people in the use of their software, I never thought registering and using the domain name, wordpresswednesdays.com, would be cause for alarm, but I don’t particularly want a fight over it.

They haven’t contacted me yet, but I have already released the domain name and started working through how I want to move forward with these tutorials.

No worries – the tutorials will be back sooner or later (perhaps later). There is much to be taught and much to learn (this includes me, of course), so keep watch and thanks for your support.

Y'ALL APPARENTLY HAVE THINGS TO SAY, CUZ

14 have spoken up.

Mrs. Wilson

Oh wow, that sucks!

How about doing it on Saturday or Sunday and calling it Self-hosted Saturday/Sunday? Apparently I like the alliteration (is that what it is)?

Hm … silly trademarks … okay, so trademarks are good, but when you’re steering people toward a site, isn’t that supposed to be a good thing?

I’ve never much liked politics anyway.

Kristi

I think you are doing the right thing. Get your readers to shoot some ideas to you about a new name that fits with what you are doing.

OMSH

I completely and totally support trademarks. I know they won’t mind me using WordPress Wednesdays on my own blog, but buying a domain with the name is sort of like claiming it perhaps?

I just need to revamp a bit, but they won’t stop.

I like doing them on Wednesdays and I don’t intend to shift that schedule.

Thanks for your feedback ladies.

WordPress, of course, still rocks the house in so many ways!

Steph

I’d have never thought of that, either. Are you wanting new ideas, or have you already come up with something?

OMSH

Well, first I have an email in to ask if it’ll be a problem to have WordPress Wednesdays ON my blog.

It isn’t a business or anything of that nature. If they say no, I’ll be asking for ideas, yea.

Steph

I just didn’t want to overstep is all. :) Frankly, you could call it “My cat pooped on my carport”, and I’d still read it.

Kuky

Ack! I really look forward to Wordpress Wednesdays. And I like that it’s called Wordpress Wednesdays.

Ho hum guess with no new tutorial today I’ll go playing around with my CSS. I like how your replies stand out so I’m off to try to figure out how to change the way my comments look.

Andrea

Seriously, they just ask that people not use the full name in a domain so users don’t get confused over whether the site is “official”. There’s loads of sites out there with the full name in the URL that they haven’t gone after, and probably won’t.

You could easily get wpwednesdays.com and they won’t say boo.

Jan

How about WorkOnItWednesdays?

Or BlogWorkWednesdays?

Or WebWorkWednesdays?

There’s got to be a happy compromise for your really useful site, Heather. I’m not a lawyer, but I do believe your take on their legal language is right. You can talk about WordPress as much as you wish inside a blog, but they ask you not to use WordPress in the domain name, which, again, seems like a totally reasonable request.

Kerry

I hope that you find something that works for everyone soon! I love your WordPress Wednesdays and can’t wait for them to start again ;-)

MIsh

How about keeping WordPress Wednesdays as an extension to your ONSH site? That way you can keep the name and we’ll find it up in the top right-hand corner of your BLOG.

Thanks!

Mishy

MIsh

oooops, Let me fix your BLOG name…

How about keeping WordPress Wednesdays as an appendage to your OMSH site? That way you can keep the name and we’ll find it up in the top right-hand corner of your BLOG.

OMSH

Thank you all so much. I AM, for now, going to keep WordPress Wednesday as an extension of the blog.

If WordPress contacts me and asks me to remove their name, I will.

At this time I’m moving over all the tutorials from mine and Kerflop’s design site we never finished (HA!) to a WordPress Wednesday archive and fixing links.

I’ll blog about it a bit in the next couple of days so you’ll understand why you might end up following a dead link as you work your way through those archives.

The same thing happened with me and my vBulletin design site, I wanted to call it vBulletin Mojo and bought the domain name. But then realized that I’d be inviolation of their copyright. So I shortened it to vbMojo. Perhaps you could do something similar.
