Yesterday, as our 100 degree Texas heat gave way to a downpour, Jeff ran out to the front porch to watch our new gutters at work; Mer and Kenny, hearing the rain, followed quickly behind him.
We know how to entertain ’round these here parts. “Come on out! You can watch our gutters with us!”
The gutters didn’t keep the kids’ attention for long though and before I knew it, my freshly showered children were receiving their 2nd shower of the day. If only I had known an hour earlier, I could have just waited and tossed some soap and shampoo out on the lawn with a “Don’t forget to wash behind your ears and between your toes!”
As it stood, there was just a lot of running, squealing, jumping up and down, rolling, cartwheeling and somersaulting.
Oh yes, and a few “near misses”.
This picture reminds me of summer. Rolling in the grass and then getting super itchy. And yet, somehow, even though the itch was often unbearable, we’d still do it again at the next hill we came upon.
You’re itchin’ now, aren’t ya?
I’d love to explain this shot, but truly, there’s no explanation.
I showed it to him earlier and said, “Look Kenny - it looks like you have on pearl drop earrings!”
He didn’t find me as funny as I did.
Imagine that.
Where was Emelie during the Sanders’ version of wet and wild?
Inside, baking another cake, of course. Obviously she needs some additional training/redirection since she forgot the #1 rule in cake baking → Momma ALWAYS gets FIRST LICK!
Today was her first day with the Cake Decorating tutor. Oh my, she had such a good time. She’s already got a list for me. She “needs” a particular tip, and this cake-form “thing-a-ma-jig” that allows her to practice icing without actually baking a cake.
For the record, I need all to know I’m completely opposed to this idea.
ANYWAY, she learned how to make three different densities of icings (different thicknesses serve different purposes), how to do a couple of different edge decorations (I’m not saying that right, I just know it), how to make “practice” icing without butter (thank you Rebecca for trying to save my pocketbook), um…she learned other stuff too, but I’m short on terminology right now, so we’ll just say that she is “out of her mind” excited about these classes.
I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot of her cake decorating “techniques”.
However, when all was said and done, I think the biggest lesson that Em (and the rest of us too, really) learned today was thanks to Bruno.
The final lesson of the day was…IF you leave a freshly iced cake (or two, as was the case) out on the table and THEN everyone leaves the house for an hour, the cake will NOT be “whole” when you return. Of course, this is helped by having a 110 lb. Great Pyrenees with a chest level with the kitchen table.
I called the vet and the forecast is vomiting and diarrhea.
Y’know, just in case you were wondering.
In your night time prayers, don’t forget to say one for my poor, VERY hairy baby. :(

Dude. Kenny’s shirt is the COOLEST. I LOVED the TMNT as a kid! I was influenced by my brother of course. ;) and pooooor Bruno! That breaks my heart. :( I housesit for a family with a great pyrenees who’s like a bajillion years old and had arthritis but still acts like he’s two. I love them! great breed. i hope he feels better. :( give him a great big ol’ smooch from me! and give yourself a hug from me, too. :)
We don’t get rain often here in the Arizona desert so when it rains, my kids are out running in it like wild men! It looks like your kids had a blast, and I have great memories of doing the same at their age. Yay for cakes! Sounds like Emelie has found her niche. Sounds like the dog has found his too. Good luck with that!
Woohoo for gutters! I’m sorry to hear about Bruno’s getting into the cake, though. I hope he doesn’t suffer the consequences too badly.
aw, poor pup! i hope the digestive system gets back to normal very quickly.
we love rain. when boy was younger we used to go on rain walks when ever we could. nothing thrilled him more than having parents who would stomp in the puddles “just cuz” :) we had a deluge this evening. i wished, as i watched it pour down, that i wasn’t at work being the responsible adult (and dealing with a major crisis) and could go out putching in the puddles. *sigh* by the time i finished work the rain was long gone.
Oh My Word! My malamute will eat anything left out on the stove or counters too. Wet/Dry Vac has saved my life a few times.
Love the rain story.
Once my border collie ate a whole chocolate cake! And she was ten times as hyper as normal but wasn’t sick a lick! She has a stomach of iron!
Big dogs equal big dog poops and big dog vomits.
PRAYERS ARE TOTALLY WITH YOU.
How much fun are warm torrential downpours? Almost makes the heat bearable.
I could say loads, but I’ll stick with just two:
1) we are supposed to wash between our toes?
2) Poor Bruno. Poor Bruno’s tummy.
Two things:
1. Please send some of that rain a little further North.
2. I’d look (and feel) just like Bruno if Em would please come to my house to practice her cake making. I LOVE CAKE!!!
Oy. Those stinkin’ food robbers! My dog has a passion for buttered and garlic-ed bread that is waiting to be popped into the oven but which is sitting out on the counter while we are bar-b-q-ing out in the back. I think she’s done it… 3 times? And once was seriously seconds after I told my nephew that she liked to steal bread from the counter and so I was going to push it to the back of the counter while i ran down the hall to visit the bathroom. No sooner had I sat down and I hear, “THE DOG JUST STOLE THE BREAD!!! SHE HAS THE BREAD!!! AAAGHHHHH!!!!!! I TOOK IT FROM HER!”
I came back and thanfully it was mostly saved due to the kid’s quick reflexes, but parmesan and garlic crumbs were all over the floor.
Another time I came home to find a smashed and broken pyrex lasagna dish on the ground that had been completely licked clean of 3/4 of a pan of brownies I had just made. That was a different dog, though.
Those stinkers. Gotta love ‘em.
Just the fact that you ahd rain makes me want to come to your house. I in central Texas and can you say DRY. The thought of cake made by someone other then me makes it even more en-t-icing….(ha ha ya that was my attempt to be funny..get the icing part?) The fact that I dont know you but want to come to your house is not all stalkerish is it?
Tiffintexas
SmockLady - Well, okay…so we often just hit the hot spots. Fine! I admit it.
Tiffany - Not stalkerish - just confused. Remember, THE CAKE IS GONE. Y’know, until today when Em will likely bake and ice another one.
I think it’s great that Emelie loves to decorate cakes. She seems to have found a niche that is fun as, well, cake. I may have to take a class myself but then I’d just make too many cakes. ;)
And POOR Bruno! I hope he is all well soon.
oh poor puppy, hope he didn’t get sick. Kids looked like they had so much fun, my kids are so wanting to play in the rain but we always have lightening with it
Poor Bruno? How about poor us? We didn’t get to finish one of Em’s cakes? Come on, now THAT has to be worth a ton sympathy, right?
Oh, and I LOVE the gutters.
**PS–OMSH is now married to a sell-out, suburbanite, former church-league softball playing, receding hairline, diminishing butt DORK. But, I have a Harley–that is worth a lot of cool points.
Our town was flooding a couple of weeks ago so you can understand my confusion when my husband got really excited about the rain yesterday. He was actually just looking forward to seeing our newly cleaned gutters in action!
great pics. :)
