This is Kenny’s new Post-It Notebook I made for him today.

Kenny's Post-It Book I made for him today.

He was out in front playing with Meredith when I finished it up - so I met him on the front porch with it. “Cool!” he said when he saw his name was on it; five year olds LOVE their names on things.

He immediately began unwinding the thread …

Unwind the thread...

And saw that it opened up to Post-Its. “Cool!” he said again (proof of his extensive vocabulary) and then he opened and closed it a half-dozen more times, put it down on the Adirondack’s arm and set-out to playing again.

Open it up for post-it notes.

I went back inside to see how Emelie was faring with her first attempt.

She was doing really well, actually.

Em wanted to switch hers up a bit.

Em →”Is there any trick to getting my name centered EXACTLY?” she asks?

Oh how I love being able to answer her questions with the same responses I received from my mother.

Me → “Yep, find the middle letter and start from there.” I told her.

Em → “Um…it doesn’t have a middle letter - what do I do now?”

Dang’it!

Me → (guessing) “Right, well then you find the middle TWO letters and center those - AND THEN, work from THERE.”

She handed it to me with a half-smerk. “Here, you find it then.”

Emster's ran vertical.

I eyed it.
Who needs perfection anyway?

She left enough room for a mini-pen inside.

Emelie decided she wanted hers to run vertical and she left enough room at the top for a mini-pen. She likes things in mini - I can’t say that I do, but I’m not 11 either.

I made another notebook for Meredith. I learned a bit more about how I wanted to thread and tie off the buttons on this one. We also used a glue stick to glue down the last Post-It because it didn’t stay “stuck” inside the notebook very well.

I imagine by the time I’m tired of making them I’ll have learned all the tricks; like WAIT UNTIL YOU CAN GET BRADS. But y’know, whatever…

Meredith's was turquoise and pink.

Meredith had hot pink Post-Its inside with a little LOVE from momma. :)

Hot pink post-its...and a little LOVE from momma.

Overall, I’m really happy with the way all of them turned out. They’d make a cute hand-out in party bags, a nice craft to do with the homeschool group’s art co-op, and a nice “something” for Emelie to make and give out to her girlfriends.

I'm really happy with the way they turned out.

Now, I need to do an online search and see where I can find some of these mini-pens; Emelie seems to like them included with each new thing she makes AND she “might” want to make a few of these for her own Etsy store OR a kids’ swap.

Anyone know where to buy more of these mini-pens?

Either way, we had fun today making them, and she’s already off making a few more for her closest friends.

On to make a half-dozen or so more.

These Post-It Notebooks were inspired by greeting arts. I didn’t use her measurements - they didn’t really work for me. Our first score was at 1″ for the small flap over, and then we allowed 1/2″ for the height. And because we made a couple not exactly square - and then one with room for a pen, we sorta made up the other measurements as we went along.

We are miles from any decent craft place, so we ended up using what we could find at our local Wal*mart, but we are planning on finding some fun cardstock and loading up on a few other things (like beads for the end of the wrap string) next time we’re able to get a few towns over to a Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. Better yet, I’ll place an online order and save the gas!

    That’s such a cute project!

  2. clistyB

well yahoo! I have something to do with the kids tomorrow! The goal is to have something interesting and out of the norm to tell dad when he comes home from work each day….

  3. DeeBee

    Way cute!!

  4. The Over-Thinker

GREAT idea! And you always take such great photos.

  5. Capturing Today

Oh, my girls will love this one - so creative and they are always swiping my post-its - I’ll just get them their own!

  6. MidlifeSlices™

I’ve purchased packages of the mini pens from the dollar bins at Target. They are usually gel pens and if you want me to go look, I’ll probably be there tomorrow and I could mail. Always happy to help, btw.

  7. Becky

My young kiddos are crazy about anything sticky…bandaids, post-its, tape, you name it. This might actually save the tape and bandaids for their real purposes! Thanks!

  8. Emily

Those are fantastic! I’m already planning mine in my head.

  9. bethany actually

Cute! What a fun little craft, and useful, too!

  10. LaurenC

Australia Post sells various pens from time to time. Last week I picked up a mini pacer (mechanical) pencil for $1AU. And they also sell mini sharpies but I am not sure how much for.

If you want me to send you some just let me know.

  11. lorimo

I love them! Did I hear you mention a “kids swap”? I’ve always thought we should try that.

  12. Mandy

I saw this and have been wanting to try it. This would make great teacher gifts or a little gift for Nana. Love it! You guys are so creative. They turned out great! Also, did I hear mention of Emelie getting her own Etsy store??? Huh, huh, did I? Can I buy cake?

  13. chris

My daughter just said, “I want you to buy me one of those. With a little pen!”
So please let us know if Emelie opens a little shop :-)

  14. Starwoodgal

    I love those!

  15. Kristi from NY

How stinkin’ cute — I’ll have to see about getting the supplies and set my daughter up to doing this!! Love that your family is so craft minded. I can’t claim that trait so much but I like the things you’ve shown us so far.

  16. Jennifer

You should put these on Etsy. ;) They are precious.

  17. SparklieSunShine

These are so cute!!! I wish I had more craft talent. I would so adore one of these.

  18. Virginia

Those are SO adorable and I love the bright colors y’all chose! :)

  19. mary

I LOVE, LOVE these! Great job!!

  20. bluejayecrafts

What a great project. I can’t wait to show my 12 yr old.

  21. Barchbo

It looks like there is a lot of magic and love at your house in the summertime! It’s like a movie!

  22. OMSH

Thanks for all the encouragement - Emelie enjoys reading through all the responses when we make something together.

Right now she’s in the kitchen baking up a batch of cupcakes to giveaway for a cakewalk at the American Legion on the 4th. :)

Okay, let me answer a few:

MidlifeSlices - Thanks! We’ve emailed; I look forward to seeing if you caught any at your Target.

The Over-Thinker - Thanks for the compliment…I’m a bit crazed over photos - my poor kids are gonna flee from this home and never pick up a camera, you watch!

LaurenC - Oh my Larry! That would be expensive. Please, please don’t pay what it’d cost so ship something to me! Not that I wouldn’t love something from Australia, but I can’t imagine it would be cost-effective!

I appreciate the thought behind it though!

lorimo - Yes, actually…a fellow momma blogger has asked me about a kids’ swap and though it probably wouldn’t be as “public” as our momma swaps are…I loved her idea!

Mandy - You’ll have to come over for cake - none of that over at Etsy. :)

Barchbo - I love summer. I just love it. And thank you - I love that thought!

As a newly-addicted Paper Addict, and long-time Office Supply Addict, I think I know something I want to do this weekend.

Sticky Notes. One of the blessings of America. :)

  24. JackieW.

    Adorable & excellent gift idea.

  25. Mrs. G.

    These are darling.

  26. Anne

    those are so cool

  27. LizP

(delurking) You can get mini-sharpies at Office Depot/Max/Staples. Dick Blick is a good (cheap) on-line source for craft and art things. For stamping and scrapbooking supplies I order from franticstamper.com

  28. OMSH

Hey thanks LizP - someone else has referred me to Dick Blick. Now the trick is going to be trying to be a good steward of my monies there!

  29. Mozi Esme's Mommy

What a great idea! I love the buttons & wrap.

  30. Lauren

I love this idea! Especially when my 7 year old goes through Post-its like they’re going out of style. (They’re great for covering up the autosensors on those annoying public toilets. She hates those…)

  31. Kristen M.

This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

  32. Aimee Greeblemonkey

oh my word. Declan would LOVE that. he is a Post It fiend.

  33. Michelle

Oh…too cute, and I’ve been out of town so I missed your surgery! Yikes. I hope all is well and you are feeling back to normal quickly! God Bless

  34. Jane

I was falling asleep thinking about I could make these as Christmas gifts for my students, I had an inspiration…golf pencils… affordable, small and easy to get a box at staples.
