Operation: Who Stole My Covers?

What am I doing today? I am deciding what I want to do to make my “marriage bed” a more peaceful, comfortable place. I mean, I don’t ALWAYS want it peaceful - a little rough and tumble can be nice *ahem* - but all this fighting for comforters, sheets, and mismatched internal temperature gauges is getting old.

So, in light of a recent link to Modern Cottage, I’ve decided I’m well due for a bed makeover.

Remember when I got this amazing mattress? It was the pillowtop mattress I fell in love with after sleeping 3 days at The W. Lakeshore at last year’s Blogher.

Well, ever since the day MY mattress arrived I’ve loved, loved, loved slipping into bed; except that my sheets don’t quite fit right, the mattress cover won’t stop moving because it too doesn’t fit right, the queen size goose down comforter isn’t quite wide enough and well, me and the OMSH-man keep hoggin’ the sheets and blanket.

So, I’m on a mission to find the perfect bed ensemble with the perfect fit and I’m all for suggestions as I go through this process, so bring it on - BRING IT ON. I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve as well that I’ve acquired across the internet in the past few days of surfing too.

Let Operation: “Who stole my covers?” COMMENCE!

I totally love 100% cotton sheets from Land’s End. They are made specifically for over stuffed mattresses. No slipping, the top sheets are extra long, so they don’t come untucked.

As for stealing covers….get 2 twin sheets and you each will have your own.

Hubby and I like different temps, different fabrics, different weights of material - how did we end up in the same bed? What saved me is I make up two separate beds. His has the heavy blanket, and no flat sheet. Mine just has a flat sheet. Pull the comforter over top during the day to make up the bed pretty like, but at night, we’ve both got just what we want waiting for us in the bed. It’s been great!

  3. Ember

Err, sorry my comment made it sound like I make two beds. It’s one bed, two HALVES.

    Need coffee now.

  4. Gin

Good luck in your pursuit. Can’t wait to read what you find!

They make some little plastic things that keep your sheets and what not on your bed that work by sliding them over the sheet (mattress cover Etc.)along the ridge on the edge of the mattress. They work really well, with the exception that they can be buggers to get on. I bought mine at L’n'T’s, but I am sure they sell them elsewhere as well. I have a memory foam matress topper that causes my sheets to not fit correctly and this has really helped with keeping the topper and the fitted sheet on the bed. Hope that helps a bit. PS I hope you are feeling better and that Jojo is doing better as well.

The only suggestion I have is 400 thread count sheets :) My husband and I finally got a great matress almost 2 years ago (cost me more than my first car). I think we ordered our sheets from Overstock.com, I LOVE THEM!! I feel like I am in a luxury hotel every night. As for a nice, beautiful bed -someday in the future.

All I can say is DEEP POCKET SHEETS! We have a double pillow top and have to have those!!

  8. Amanda

Many many years ago, we started using a duvet with a cover and ditched the top sheet. I’ll NEVER GO BACK now. If you buy a nice washable duvet cover, you don’t actually NEED a top sheet anymore and it’s SO much more comfortable to sleep without one!

  9. Mrs. Wilson

I’m SO going to do this! All I need is a job to pay for it … I hope you have fun on your quest!!

  10. Jess

I recommend The Company Store. Lots of great options for deep pocket fitted sheets (we have a pillow top, so I am familiar w/ the fit issue). Everything I’ve ordered from them has been lovely and washed up great.

  11. clistyB

did you just LOVE the Bliss toiletries at the W ? mmmmmm
The only thing I would suggest is if you go with a duvet and insert, keep them both from the same company, because I have found out by trial and error that each company has their own idea of what an insert should measure. I have tried being sneaky and buying the cheap insert and then getting a Pottery Barn duvet cover and they NEVER matched up quite right, didn’t attach on the inside at all, it just made me insane(r).

Long time reader… first time commenter. I am a work-at-home mom, doing “bedding” for a living. :)
Your term “marriage-bed” struck a chord with me… it’s just SO important that your marriage bed be a place that you look forward to!
I am a rep for a company that brings 4-star-hotel-quality bedding to consumers through direct sales. Think Westin-heavenly bed type bedding… for your own home - at a fraction of the cost. With personal service from someone who actually knows their product and cares about your needs.
I have never slept better. I encourage you to check out my website - of course let me know if you have questions.
I can definately help you with the issues you’re describing.
Thanks for letting me share. :)
    Love your blog!

The best thing we ever did was get a queen sized doona (comforter) for our queen sized bed!

  14. AmyL

I have to agree about the 400 count sheets. Get at least that count or higher. They’ll even get softer over time. :)

  15. naomi

we use sheets made of cotton jersey material (the stuff that t-shirts are made of). it’s soft and comfortable and stretches beautifully over our oversize mattress (we bought king size to fit over our custom length mattress).

as for covers, bran and i discovered early in our relationship that sharing blankets had the potential to create grounds for divorce. therefore we each have our own blankets.

  16. Linda

Only suggestion I have is to go no less that Egyptian Cotton 600 thread count. My mom bought me a set for Christmas last year and I’ve slept in nothing but sheet Heaven ever since. I will wash and dry then put them right back on the bed. They cost a good deal more but they last forever and feel awesome.

  17. Shannon

My parents had this issue and she found pillowtop sheets in solid colors. As for the blankets and comforter she buys them a size larger than her bed. They have a queen size and she buys her comforter in the king size.
    Just a thought!

  18. Maren

My favorite sheets are Waverly from Target. We make our bed as such: fitted sheet, twin sized blanket on my side, flat sheet, two full-size quilts (offset so there is one for each of us) and a king-size quilt on top. We have a queen-size bed, but the extra size keeps the peace. We also usually put the top quilt on the wrong way, so the longest dimension runs across the bed instead of head-to-toe. When I said “quilt” for my husband, that means “25 year-old Sesame Street comforter”.

  19. Erin

    I second the King-sized-comforter-for-queen-sized-bed idea.

I have a couple of sets of sheets from Linens N’ Things that are awesome. High thread count (400? More? I’m not sure), super soft, AND they stay on through my husband’s middle-of-the-night thrashing. The sheets I have are the Toscana brand, but of course, they were discontinued. The lady at LNT said that these were comparable. I haven’t tried them myself (yet), but they look pretty nice.

  20. Lanna

King size comforter, blanket and maybe even a king sized flat sheet. Seriously. Awesome. Then you just need a queen size fitted sheet and whatever pillowcases and you’re good to go. Worked out nice for us when we finally got a king-sized bed - we didn’t have to go buy all new stuff since we already had the king comforter and blankets. :)

  22. Midwest Mommy

Ok, a few years ago Hubs and I did the best thing for our marriage. We each got our own king size down comforter. It has never been better! When I make the bed just simply put one under the other and no one knows! Love it!

  23. Liz C.

Definitely go king-sized for a queen bed comforter. Ours is a king-sized bed, but I found a VAST comforter that works.

For the temperature disparities, my mom took two correctly-sized blankets, one a regular thermal and one a quilt, and sliced both up the middle, swapped halve, and restitched. The “cool” half goes on her side, “warm” on Dad’s, and there’ no slippage at an overlap, so the whole bed stays very tidy.

DO get the deep-reach sheets. That made all the difference with my daughter’s new mattress.

The blankets are still a big wad, because she rolls up in a ball all night (I do not envy the future spouses of ANY of my offspring).

Go for 300+ threadcounts. And, sateen sheets feel totally silky without being slimey (as blends can feel); poplin are THE crispest and coolest, to me.

We stopped spending gobs of money on “good” pillows. Dear Rock-Headed Husband kills a $50 pillow in three months, or a $5 pillow in three months. We just buy inexpensive pillows in sets, and trade out for new every quarter.

  24. Ann from Montana

I’m another Lands’ End sheet fan as the fitted sheets fit the deeper mattresses properly and the quality has always been superb - in my opinion!!!

Agree with the oversized comforter - I like “The Company Store” - http://www.thecompanystore.com - they have great quality down and other fill comforters if you are allergic… PLUS in addition to being able to get a King for a queen, they have oversized in length and width - AND duvet covers for the oversize if you want to go that way.

I’ve also done the - make the bed with 2 sheets, 2 blankies - one comforter over the whole thing but each has his/her own covers and “temp” control…I’m 53 in a month - I’m warm to HOT!!! at night.

  25. OhBlahDah

    Bargain? J.C. Penny Deep Pocket (18″ thick)Queen 4 pc set at $69. (420 TC)

I have used them. I got the Barrato with the little embroidered lines. Love love love them. Cotton gets wrinkly, but ohhh so soft. The all around elastic really helps on thick mattresses.

  26. Tammy

My only suggestion is one that I heard from Martha Stewart years ago. If you end up with a down comforter/duvet combination (which I would recommend), sew durable ribbon to the inside corners of the duvet and to each corner of the comforter and tie the matching corners together to keep the insert from slipping. We used to always end up with what we called “chicken skin” at the top and a big gob at the bottom. Those days are over!

  27. Tammy

Me again…if you have a “he’s hot and she’s cold” situation, they have dual-warmth comforters with different weights of down..sweet! http://www.selectcomfort.com/pillows_bedroom_bedding/productSet.cfm?Category_ID=241&SubCategoryID=426&sortOrder=&recordNum=14&mc=501046&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Sites-_-Bizrate-_-Bedding-_-421025
