Thirteen people in a beach house is a little tight; I’ve been escaping to our room more and more often - wedged against the sliding glass door - seeking a bit of silence.
Everyone slept in at the house this morning - the sun rose, but the cloud coverage made 8:00 feel like twilight. The ocean is still churning and the tide’s internal struggle is relentless as it fights its way to the shore, all the while drawing itself back out to sea. The draw is so strong it is almost scary to wade even ankle deep.
This morning Jeff stood on the back deck with his coffee mug in hand. The wind’s gusts were grabbing at his hand and mug, shaking it back and forth, until the wind lifted the coffee from inside the rim of the cup and sucked-it away as if by an invisible straw.
Today we were supposed to have our extended family photos on the beach - everyone in white shirts, blue jeans and barefooted. We joke about what kind of photo this could be - making light of a frustrating situation.
“How many families can boast of a family portrait with a surging tide backdrop?” Jeff’s brother jokes.
“If the rain comes it’d be like a wet t-shirt contest!” someone else adds.
And then everything quiets down and everyone’s eyes are drawn to the sliding glass doors and the constant, tumulteous activity just beyond it.
It looks like we might have a bit of sunshine the day before we leave. Hopefully we can do all we’ve planned (sand candles, plaster foot prints, and sand castles) then.

Wow, the image of the wind sucking Jeff’s coffee out like a straw is pretty awesome. Though I do hope the weather clears up for you soon so you can enjoy the beach, there is something awesome about getting to see the power of the sea and the weather there. Keep safe, and may God give you peace in the storms. :-)
Yikes! I hope y’all stay safe. It sounds like a good opportunity to lounge around inside and play a lot of card games. =)
Heather, I’ve been thinking about you on and off this morning. I saw your flickr pictures roll through earlier and when I saw the weather, I just shook my head. I would feel claustrophobic too. I hope that things clear up soon. And retreat to your hideaway as much as you need to.
All I can say is “WOW”!! That is crazy!! Not the kind of vacation memories you had planned on. God bless! (and I hope things clear up soon so you can all get that picture together).
Be safe!
Oh be safe. We are actually hoping for some of the rain from the storm up my way (Austin area), but I wouldn’t want to be down on the coast.
Where did ya’ll head down to? Galveston or Crystal Beach?

No WAY! That’s insane!!
I’ve been thinking about y’all. Prayers.
Stay safe. I’ve been watching the coverage and thinking of you. I’m glad you could have a sense of humor about it–what else can you do? I hope you do get your good day in before you have to come back, and I hope the worst is over.
Lived down in this area for a while and navigated the crazy summer of ‘05. Hope you all are well and making memories! It is beautiful and awesome in its own way!!
Blessings!
Oh man. That IS frustrating! I’d be running for my room as well for a little peace!
eeeeeek! Looks like it got better though. Right? RIGHT?
