‘MUST EAT COOKIES!’ – Love, The Cookie Monster
Just as I anticipated, Emelie’s Slumber Party left NO room for slumber; for me or her girlie guests. There was a brief reprieve where all the girls settled in to watch the movie Flicka, but a few hours later, I realized it was only the calm before the storm.
Sometime around 2:00 am, I locked myself in my room with ear plugs and an endless supply of back episodes of LOST, completely oblivious to the pre-teen tornados ravaging my living room and kitchen.
A few hours earlier…
Earlier that day the Van Gogh Gumdrop Kit arrived from The Gumdrop Cookie Shop.
The Van Gogh Gumdrop Kit includes:
- 12 blank sugar cookies with frosting sheets adhered to them.
- 10 U.S. Certified Food Color Edible Ink Markers – the markers are two-sided with both a broad and fine tip.
- 12 Cello bags
- 12 pieces of assorted colored raffia
Emelie was VERY excited, having already spent a bit of time looking at some of the couture decorated cookies in The Gumdrop Couture Shop.
Is it just me or is ‘Scallop in Pink Hues’ almost too pretty to eat?
Key word being ‘almost’.
Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of sugar cookies (though my kiddos are), so what caught my attention was the store’s new sweet statements…most specifically the gooey brownies with an enclosed sugar cookie message.
Now THAT is my kind of sweet statement!
For my birthday? DO NOT send flowers.
Send brownies.
June 16.
Write it down.
Got it?
Good…we can go on now.
So, after the girls ate pizza, played ‘telephone’, squealed (like stuck pigs, I kid you not), got the 2 minute house tour, put on pjs, wrote on the chalkboard, unrolled their sleeping bags, claimed their spots, and watched a movie, it was time to decorate cookies!!
Back to the table they went and everyone received a cookie, already placed in its own bag, tied up with the multi-colored raffia.
It was fun to watch how each one of them approached their cookies.
Some grabbed a random color and just started drawing. Others sat back, staring, waiting for the art to ’show’ itself. And one of them sat and waited to see what everyone else would do and showed the highest form of flattery by copying.
Remember when your mom used to say that?
“Calm down Honey! IT’S OKAY that your brother is copying you – why, he’s giving you the HIGHEST COMPLIMENT EVER!” she would say.
But you knew better.
You knew he was just trying to drive you crazy.
And he was.
Guess what?
Your mom? She knew it too – she was just too tired to do anything about it.
ANYWAY…
Someone made a joke about how odd it was to MARKER on a cookie.
“It’s almost like we’re doing something wrong!” giggled another.
“Yea, like my mom is gonna come in here any minute and scream, ‘WHY ARE YOU DRAWING ON THE COOKIES WITH MARKERS!’” – and off they were again, rolling in the exhausted, ’stop-it-I-can’t-breathe’ laughter reserved specifically for slumber parties.
I laughed HARD when I saw this cookie.
It reads, “This is not a pretty cookie.”
I asked her what happened.
“Nothing. It’s modern art.”
Um…okay.
And then, she ate it.
Another of Em’s friends took the opportunity to practice her Latin.
She ate hers too.
Yet another friend looked to have taken tips from Van Gogh himself.
It really was just plain fun. A couple of the girls decided to NOT eat their cookies because they wanted to take them home and show their moms, but for the most part, they were consumed.
We talked about whether or not it would have been better to bake up a batch of our sugar cookies, but Emelie was right when she pointed out that the only reason they could easily draw their own designs with the Van Gogh Gumdrop Kit was because each cookie was equally flat and smooth…with the frosting sheet.
And a few of the others, who have iced cookies with Emelie before, agreed that ‘markering’ cookies is a LOT easier than icing them; and more fun too!
Thea Zagata, the owner of The Gumdrop Cookie Shop, was kind enough to offer a coupon for 10 percent off anything in her store. Just use the coupon code OMSH10. Every little bit of savings counts, eh?
Oh, and check out what happens after the sugar high poops out – oh, at around 4:30 am.
I was exhausted, but Emelie was on cloud nine – she knew the next day brought her ‘birthday gift’ from us – a trip to The American Girl store in Dallas, TX! I’ll post on it later!

11 have spoken up.

looks like a great time was had by all (of the under 18 crowd anyway…lol). I’ll have to remember these cookies for later. What a great idea.

I. MUST. HAVE. THOSE. COOKIES.
If they don’t ship to me, I’m gonna jump!
Latin? Latin? What kinds of kids are you harboring in your corner of TX? The only latin I spoke at twelve was PIG-latin.

I kid you not, I just KNEW that the modern art cookie was going to belong to that particular girl. :-) She made an impression, I guess!

If only they were gluten free!

That’s so cool! It looks like great fun, and what better fun than fun you can eat! What a great slumber party!
Hey I’ve been wondering if you’d be willing to do a post about blogging again, specifically about advertising on blogs. Where do you get your ads, and the sponsored links using your own words, that’s pretty cool. Have you ever thought about doing this?

Brenda – I haven’t done any WordPress Wednesday posts in a while because they are sooooo time consuming and a girl’s gotta make a living! HA!
But…right now I’m running ads from Blogher Ads and my sponsored links come to me – I don’t use an outside ad company. People contact me, I give my rate, and they tell me what they want the text to say. :)
