A few months ago I posted this fabulous Recycled Paper Address File from Ugly Kitty over at Etsy. Made from recycled magazine subscription cards, office papers, papers found in her g-ma’s attic, and even dumpsters, I immediately thought it was something I’d like to give Jessica.
When Jessica and I first met both of us were on the downside of debt and could hardly afford our own web hosting, much less gifts to each other. Through some unspoken understanding, we didn’t exchange gifts for birthdays or Christmas, but instead sent emails and/or made phone calls when it was needed. Later on, when things were a little less tight, our businesses growing, we started to send little surprises here and there - though never on Christmas and not usually birthdays either. It may seem strange, but it works for us.
Somehow though this year I had a gift that would be here in time for Christmas. Not being sure I wanted to start that tradition, I considered whether I should wait and give it later because I didn’t want Jessica to think she needed to get anything for me. I even asked my mom about it and she said, “You ought to save it for another day when it would be totally unexpected.” and I agreed. I would wait until January and send it on then.
Not but two days later I was yappin’ to Jess on the phone and she mentioned something about my Christmas gift.
“Gift? You got me a gift? Well, I have a gift for you too.”
We squealed like two stuck pigs, because truly we both adore surprises. Jessica kept laying hints that she was getting me something Mac related to go with my new MacBook and I didn’t want to lay ANY hints because I didn’t want her to have a chance in the world of guessing.
And then, Thursday night we were talking over our web cams. She was making faces at my kids and me at hers and I believe Nathan called me a Green Booger Tractor and I called him a Dirty Sock Sandwich and all was going as usual when I noticed Jessica was laughing.
Knowing it was unlikely she was cracking up at mine and Nathan’s jokes, I asked her what was so funny…
“This email. Heather! Oh my goodness, did you order my Christmas gift from Etsy?”
“Why?” (I didn’t want to give any hints - I didn’t want her guessing.)
“Because I think - well, I believe we got each other the same thing!”
“WHAT!? Really? Did you order mine from Ugly Kitty?”
And she died laughing - and of course, so did I. And with our husbands rolling their eyes in the background we fell apart into fits of laughter with lots of tears and snorting. Okay, so maybe it was only me who snorted. At any rate, it WAS true - we had purchased the EXACT gift for each other.
Isn’t it lovely?
Merry Christmas Jessica.
And? Thank you - it’s perfect.
Bwahahahahaha!!

Don’t you just love synchronicity?
Peas and carrots, you two.
You two are cut from the same cloth!! :-)
Two peas in a pod you are. And apparently I am Yoda.
You two are the cutest!
My best friend and I do the same thing. We’re so much alike it’s almost scary. We think alike, have the ability to complete each other’s sentences, know when the other needs a hug, phone call, or if one of us is in trouble. It never fails when I’m having a bad day … she calls and visa versa. I’ve always heard that somewhere in the world we all have a twin … I think I found mine in my best friend … AND it sounds like you may have found yours!
Like peanut butter and jelly. :)
You guys are so cute.
I love it! The story the cards, and how you two are so much alike, yay to great friendships!
Oh, my freak! You guys crack me up.
It’s like you did the Vulcan mind meld or something. Except you are both way hotter and have more attractive hair and ears than anything that has ever come out of Star Trek.
That is totally freaking awesome!
It was meant to be! I love it! Aileen and I have a similar thing going with a certain avenging narwhal action figure… don’t ask…
How perfect - you both know the other really likes her present! :)
If I thought it would change things, I would say, “You two are weird.” But, of course, you two already know that.
What a cool gift, and what a cool friend. It sounds like a friendship made to last!
Stacie
hahahahaha …. that’s awesome!
How funny! This is just the kind of thing my sister and I would do. We’ve learnt over time that we need to talk before we both give dad the same desklamp for Christmas!
great minds do think alike!
