Oh yea, OMSH is lovin' the lime!

It is cheaper to buy a blackboard, I tell ya.

After quite a bit of this…

Sanding off the texture.

And then a bit more of this…

Second round of sanding.

In order to provide me this…

I taped off the wall and edged out with the first coat.

The first two layers will be magnetic paint.

So I could get started on this…

Here the final magnetic coat has just been applied.

Two layers of magnetic coats go on first.

And this…

Almost Dry - Magnetic coats finished.

This was the final coat of magnetic paint - not yet dry.

Mr. OMSH isn’t feeling so hot.

I wouldn’t want to be the “I told you so” type who annoyingly points out I made multiple suggestions for him to wear a mask while he was sanding. **AHEM**

I also wouldn’t want to emphasize that point multiple times–like an annoying, pestulance, simply because I’m so happy that he sanded my wall–even if he did it a bit begrudgingly.

The texture was EVERYWHERE. You cannot even imagine–well yeah, you probably can. I was closed in my room, the kids were locked holed-up in their room. There was a dense fog throughout the rest of the house, not too much unlike a Willie Nelson concert (yes, THAT bad).

Now Mr. OMSH is in bed, with a goopy-gooped head,…suffering.
All for my as-of-yet-unfinished-wall-that-will-be-finished-today.

I need to vacuum out his nasal passages I believe.
Poor Baby, let me get the Dyson.

I'm not gonna say I told you so...

UPDATE!

  • I finished the magnetized chalkboard wall here.
  • The kids take it for a test run here.

love it!!! we had a chalkboard wall in last home and I miss it everyday here. You are gonna LOVE it. He did a great job!!!!

  2. OMSH

Hey now, HE sanded and I PAINTED. It was our agreement. I’m the painter of the family.

This was just the magnetic coats. Today I have to do the chalkboard coats and then the can says we have to wait 3 days (which here in humidity-ville means 5 days) before using.

  3. Natalie

Oh delight! Well, I am sorry about the dust and husband who skipped the mask, but the results are awesome. The whole wall will be a blackboard?! Too cool.

  4. that girl

Is it for the kids only or are you going to write things on the wall/artsy? It’s so big! You guys are in project mode over there as I sit with my coffee and do nothing!

  5. OMSH

Natalie - Yep, the WHOLE WALL will be a magnetic blackboard.

that girl - OF COURSE it isn’t for the kids only. I AM in project mode. I have a few other things up my sleeve.

  6. SparklieSunShine

Poor Mr. OMSH, but I am LOVING the wall. I can’t wait to see what you do with it.

  7. mary

Oh my goodness. THIS is amazing. I’m sk*rting it!

  8. moosh in indy.

How much fun will that be in the house of OMSH?
But Mr. OMSH? Dude, listen to your wife, wear a mask. (Too late, I know.)

  9. suann

    omsh! i love it!

  10. Jenk

Oh Horray! I’ve always wanted a chalkboard wall in my kitchen! I am so very very jealous.

    Very.

  11. Meg

Very cool! We did one wall of the boys’ room in corkboard. Sure, we attached it with floor tile adhesive, so that it will NEVER come off, which means we are committed to it until they are long grown and gone. But hey - it’s GREAT for now.

  12. Darla

I wondered how much work a chalkboard wall would be. Thanks for heading me off at the pass. =)

  13. OMSH

Meg - I’ve wanted to do a wall in corkboard just because the texture is so cool. I’m sort of a texture freak.

I’m not sure I would put it in Kenny’s room though because he’s known to pick the bumps off the texture near his wall, so I can only imagine how horrible the corkboard would look.

Then again, I’m awfully good with “stares” that say “YOU HAD BETTER NOT!”

Jenk - Then DO one. It isn’t that they are hard, just time consuming. You truly do have to honor the drying time and then, of course, it is VERY hard to get black to look smooth.

Thanks you guys - it has been a fun project. I’ll be sure to take photos of it as it moves along.

So cool! We had something similar to that in our house previously, except our chalkboard paint wasn’t so great and there were spots on it in which you couldn’t write– it’d get scratchy instead of smooth :( But still, it looks like your stuff is better than what we had… I can’t wait to see pics of what you guys do with it!

  15. Nancy

Men and failure to follow directions… My hubby is the same way - no gloves/mask/whatever unless absolutely necessary. THEN, they complain later. Hmm.

It looks cool, though. Someday, when we have a house, I think I’d like to do that - in the kitchen or playroom - hey, don’t you need a magnetic chalkboard wall in EVERY room? :)

  16. Elizabeth

It’s going to be SO COOL!!

  17. Haley

Must have been something in the air this weekend for home improvement projects. We tore out some of the tile in our kitchen and mostly have drywall back up. They come week after next to install granite countertops, then we tile, then I swear “Never again!”

Wonder if my boss would let me do one wall of my office in that paint…

  18. Natalie

In my head I heard myself say the juvenile exclamation: “Shut up.” A magnetic chalkboard? oh that is just too cool. My house will have to have that…

  20. Jenny, Bloggess.

I’m so envious I can’t even stand it. I can’t even work up the nerve to do one red wall.

  21. Kristina Brooke

This is so cool. We live in an apartment so I could never do that, but I really want to. I love it.
