Day 4 – No Rest for the Weary

Yesterday marked seven years for my baby; the li’l one who was never supposed to grow up – the boy that refuses to stay a baby. Because his birthday is in December it doesn’t make for a good time to plan a birthday party, so he typically gets two parties – one with immediate family, and another with his friends in January.

For our family get together Kenny opted to eat at a local Chinese restaurant, followed by a trip to Izzy and Poppa Ken’s house to open presents and eat cake and ice cream. His great-grandparents, Momma Milly and Poppa Buddie dropped in too – 4 generations around a table talking and laughing together; what a blessing.

Not wanting to leave, we lingered until around 10:45 – one advantage to living 8 doors down from my parents. :) Once everyone settled into bed Jeff and I discussed Kenny’s complaint about a sour stomach, thinking it probably was the result of too much food…hoping he’d sleep it off.

An hour later Kenny woke, vomited everywhere in his bed, and from what we can make out from the trail, slid off his bed, pulled on his pajama bottoms and headed for the restroom. I heard him when he threw up and was wrestling with my own pjs and waking Jeff up to get to his room.

Jeff corralled Kenny to the toilet and I stood in the doorway to his room wondering why and how I was going to clean it all up. In raising these three kids we’ve had some hairy messes, but never – not once – have I seen this much vomit.

It was EVERYWHERE.

I won’t go into too much detail about the clean-up, except to say I was SLIDING on it (this might help you understand why I wrestled with my own gastric juices a bit). I continued to clean while Jeff helped Kenny shower and calmed him as he continued to throw up.

Once Kenny settled a bit, Jeff helped me clean too – we cleaned until 1:00 am – every time we turned around we had missed a spot.

Here is where I thank the good Lord there is NO CARPET in the house.

With Kenny snuggled in bed next to me I could feel each relentless wave as his body cramped up over and over into the early morning hours.

The last time I glanced at the clock it was 4:45 am; and finally, we were both "out". He’s doing better this morning, but sore. Jeff stayed home to help me with Kenny so I could get some work done and we will probably both sack out in a nap at some point.

Quick set of the timer and today’s 7 Days photo was behind us (up top).

No rest for the weary yet, but below is a compilation of some of last night’s iPhone snapshots.

Kenny turns 7

Now for that nap…

Y'ALL APPARENTLY HAVE THINGS TO SAY, CUZ

7 have spoken up.

Sounds a little bit like our night. Although, we had a little less mess as the one vomiting was well prepared because she had not felt well most of the day. Hopefully this moves on quickly and everyone will be healthy and well rested before the holiday craziness begins.

Happy Birthday Kenny.

Dad

Can’t think of much worse. Sure am sorry Kenny had the upchucks last night, but sure enjoyed him what he was at our house. Hope all of you get good sleep tonight. This will be a birthday not easily forgotten.

Poor kid, especially on your birthday celebration night. And poor mom and dad cleaning it all up. As someone who reacts badly to anyone vomiting it has amazed me since having kids that God provides a way to get things cleaned up and children cared for with minimal trouble. This is one of God’s blessings to parents I believe.

Ahhh, vomiting birthday celebration food is wrong on so many levels!!

I hope it is just a fluke one evening thing and not ‘a little somethin’ for the holidays’.

Those pictures are just awesome!! (Thanks for not capturing the later night festivities!)

poor little guy! i remember boy’s first adventure into the real of reverse peristalsis was both frightening and confusing to him. he had no idea what to do. he still doesn’t and he’s 17. we’ve managed to at least get him to use his bedroom trash can if necessary.

i hope his tummy settles down.

Anita

Poor widdle guy! Don’t you just hate when they get sick. I have walked down our hallway to the bathroom with my kids throwing up in my hands.

Erica

Looks like he had a good time until then. Sick babies are no fun. Hope he’s back to normal soon. And I hope you all get some good rest for Christmas!
