At times Emelie disappears in her room for a bit. Sometimes it is to get away from her brother and sister, sometimes it is to have some measure of quiet, other times it is to create.
After our evening with Izzy and Poppa Ken, she came home with a few more Altoid tins from my Mother. Emelie LOVES Altoid tins.
Not but an hour or so later she came out with her newest creation.
Pulling off the magnetic denim “clasp” she reveals the inner treasures.
What are “treasures” you ask? Perhaps “treasures” isn’t the right word. Let’s call it the tin full of what every 11 year old needs:
The magnetic tin box is perfect for mini-magnets and mini-notes. Everything is “mini” in an Altoid tin.
Now that I look closer I see some coinage too.
I’m really diggin’ the polka dot tab markers. Hmmmm…
I might not have mentioned this before, but I have been looking around for cake decorating courses for youth, etc… to try and find some way to help Emelie along on her quest for making beautiful cakes. She spent a bit of her Amazon gift certificate to purchase some books to get her juices flowing and juices weren’t the only thing that flowed - oh my, we were literally salivating through the books.
At any rate, I found a woman who is local (WHICH IS AN ANSWER TO PRAYER AS NOTHING IS LOCAL HERE.) and has been decorating cakes for 13 years. She studied Cake Decorating for three years in England and is a Wilton Method Instructor, conducting classes at Michaels and our local university.
She offers private Cake Decorating lessons too - and that’s what Emelie is starting! I’m so excited - this begins June 30th!
So, expect to see more cakes soon! Her first cake will be a 4th of July cake for a local fundraiser (cakes contributed for a cakewalk).

She is so talented and creative! I love the altoid box. I love all things miniature, so that is right up my alley.
I’m so excited for her about the private cake decorating classes. I have been pondering taking some of my own. I can’t wait to see her fourth of July cake!
That is totally cool. You’ve got a little creative genius in your home (probably several, actually).
Seriously, I thought this was a project presented by an adult. The magnetic clasp and cool colors really make this an Instructibles or Make Magazine article waiting to happen.
Tell her I hope my kids are as creative as she is.

I used to love altoid tins as well. I’d buy them just for the tins. I still keep my bobby pins in them, just because I have not found anything better. But, I do not have a nicely decorated one like that.
she’s so crafty! she should start her own craft blog!
Here’s an idea for her

That “mini” box is so dang cute! Way to go Emelie!
Thanks all - I’ll make sure she reads - and DaisyCake - she’ll LOVE that!
What a gal! Can’t wait to see her newest cake creations. I think that is SO great that you’re encouraging her to pursue that. Who knows? She could end up doing it as a career!
My husband loves using the tins for screws and nails, etc.
And about the cakes I’m so excited for E! Her teacher sounds fantastic and its wonderful for a young girl (not so young anymore I guess) to have a real teacher, skilled, to help her move forward with her passion.
Very cool. I’ve seen a lot of Stampers decorating Altoid boxes. Her work is very very creative, love it!
Clever kid! I have my own personal 11 year old (”Nearly 12, Mother… three more weeks!”) and she’s going to want to make one. And then one for her friends. Good thing the 3 year old can devour a whole tin of Altoids in about 5 minutes… teflon taste buds, that one.
Sounds like the OMSH household runs into our problem… I’ve a young artist who wants art lessons, but not “kid art”–she wants anatomy and perspective and oil techniques and such. Finding an adult mentor willing and able to work with a slightly odd tween is a treat. We’ve been following the cake creations with great admiration and interest.
I am grateful I’ve never once been tempted to eat one of my child’s art projects.
That is so cute. What a great idea.
Clever girl - it’s lovely!
I love that your daughter is so creative. I have 2 boys, one is “kind of” creative, but his creativitiy usualyy involves bugs and rocks and twigs. The Altoid thing is an awesome idea. She should try to market those - Etsy? :) I would love something like that for my purse!
Very cool! My friend is doing a cake decorating course and she is learning so much.
I love altoid tins too! Perfect for a few dollars and chapstick when we go to the pool! I tell you what, that Emelie never ceases to amaze me. What a testament to awesome parents! And I cannot wait to see the cakes!
Am I the only one seeing the need for an Emelie Etsy Shop? I’d love some of those decorative tins. She is so talented!
that is so adorable and creative! yay for the cake class!
Linda,
Yea, Emelie could be turning a pretty profit in under a year, get a small business grant, and pay her own way through college.
Wow! That is very creative. Can’t wait to see the cakes as well.
How cute & creative is she?! I love it!
Cool! Her cakes are fab and I can’t wait to watch her “grow” as an artist! That will be fun to see and if you ever need to move some of those cakes - send them my way!
That’s awesome that Emelie is getting private cake decorating lessons!!! WOW. She’s one lucky girl! (and you’re one lucky family to be getting to sample her “work”!) :)
She is so creative. She needs to start a blog about all her creations.
Oh my, how exciting!! And I shall be drooling over the yumminess from up here. Color me jealous. ;)
Your whole family is amazingly creative. I would never come up with that and I’m .. cough .. well over 11.
[...] she wanted hers to run vertical and she left enough room at the top for a mini-pen. She likes things in mini - I can’t say that I do, but I’m not 11 [...]
Adorable–and what a great mom to allow her access to the resources to create! Blessings!
