The day is coming when the government will tell us exactly how we have to raise our children. It starts here. “A Democratic assemblywoman from Mountain View says she will submit a bill next week … proposing that California become the first state in the nation to make spanking of children 3 years old and under a misdemeanor.” However you fall on this issue - is it really the place of local, state or national government?

   OK, I know I’ve posted about our beliefs on spanking and why we don’t, but it’s NOT the governemnts place to tell me I can’t. I may have to linkyloo to this article and discuss it a bit, especially after what I wrote about spanking.

   I understand the idea is to protect those that cannot protect themselves, but oh what a slippery slope.

   I rarely spank. I, in fact, HATE doing it, but I am not opposed to those that do it properly, nor am I opposed to doing it myself, when ALL ELSE HAS FAILED. It can be an effective tool, but I certainly don’t think the gov’t should step in here. EEK. What’s next? We already have to worry about them showing up at our door for homeschooling!

   I have spent literally hours thinking over this issue in the last 10 years. I’ve read everything from Dr. Sears to the Pearls (yes, opposite extremes) and Jeff and I have prayed diligently over it.

   One thing I know is that spanking does not equate to abuse. Abuse can, however, involve spanking. At that point, I wouldn’t call it spanking, but rather, abuse.

   And it is a fine line.
   And obviously there are some parents who should never spank b/c of anger issues, etc…

   And there are some parents that do need to try alternatives but use spanking b/c they are lazy and don’t want to initiate the time to develop the relationships necessary for proper discipline.

   Discipline does not have to be spanking.

   BUT … either way I don’t need the gov’t in my home any more than they already are.
